What is a Doula?
There are typically two main types of doulas.
Birth Doula: Supports the pregnant person during labor and delivery. This includes providing pain relief techniques (such as breathing exercises, massage, and positioning), emotional support, helping the birthing person advocate for themselves, and offering reassurance.
Postpartum Doula: Offers support after the baby is born. They assist with newborn care, breastfeeding, and helping the new parent adjust to life with their baby. Postpartum doulas may also offer guidance on infant sleep, emotional recovery, and provide help around the house.
Benefits of a Doula
Doulas are often seen as advocates for the birthing person's choices, ensuring that they feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout the entire process. While doulas are not medical professionals, studies have shown that their support can lead to better birth outcomes, including shorter labor, fewer complications, and lower rates of interventions like cesarean sections.
